Mobile phone ban getting tougher

2nd February 2007

The ban on using mobile phones when driving came into effect in 2003, but many drivers are still flouting the law.

From 27th February 2007, drivers caught using a mobile phone whilst driving face a £60 fine (previously £30) and three points on their driving licence. Employers who cause or permit their employees to take or make phone calls or text messages whilst driving will also face prosecution under the revised law.

Drivers can also be prosecuted for using a hands-free device if they are deemed not to be in proper control of their vehicle, and can incur the same penalties.
