Illegal number plates crackdown

3rd May 2007

Police are targeting motorists who display illegal private number plates on their vehicles in a new crackdown.

Many motorists opt to alter their private number plates by spacing the characters differently or using non-regulation fonts. Both practices are highly illegal.

PC Martin Gardner of Gloucestershire Police said: "We rely more and more on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology and other forms of recording equipment, which allow us to pick up on a host of offences".

Police will be stepping up their efforts and making checks on illegal private number plates. Motorists can expect to be stopped and given a fine of £1,000 for using illegal plates.

PC Peter Hare of Thames Valley Police said: "Over recent years there has been a growing trend to alter registration marks issued by the DVLA. Drivers may see the altering of a number plate as trivial and harmless, but this is illegal and raises vehicle identification concerns.

"If a vehicle owner has illegal number plates on their car, they should change them immediately."
