Fake number plates linked to bank raid

4th May 2007

A fake number plate kit may have been used in a bank robbery in Bolton in which police officers were shot at.

Greater Manchester Police believe the equpment was used to make false number plates for vehicles which were used in the robbery at Barclays Bank in Horwich, Bolton in November 2006.

The number plate kit consists of a wooden shelving unit holding letters and numbers alongside a box of blank number plates. Police believe the kit was stolen in Wigan, Merseyside or Cheshire, and are offering a £50,000 reward to anyone coming forward with information on the incident.

The robbers drove off in a red Ford Focus which was later swapped for a silver Ford Mondeo. Police said both cars displayed false number plates.

Two men, aged 25 and 26 were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
