UK car number plate overhaul proposed
4th June 2007
British police have called for a complete overhaul of the UK's car number plates system in order to combat the rise in car number plate cloning and thefts.
Superintendent John Wake said: "The car number plate is the first form of identification of the vehicle to the general public. I don't have the confidence that beyond that you can identify that a vehicle is the legitimate vehicle for that car number plate."
The rise in cloned or stolen number plates has been attributed to the increase in the numbers of speed cameras and fuel prices. The number of car number plates stolen to be used to escape motoring fines or to commit crimes such as petrol theft, have risen by around 25% in the past year.
