Student fined £30 for illegal number plates

9th July 2007

Number plates news

An A-Level student from Northern Ireland was shocked to receive a £30 on-the-spot fine for number plates he didn't know were illegal.

Tony Reid, 18, from Ulster, was pulled over and fined just four weeks after he bought his Vauxhall Corsa. Unaware that his number plates were illegal, Tony felt the fine was rather heavy-handed.

"The officer asked me if I was aware that my number plates were illegal. I said no and explained that my mum had bought the car from a private seller about a month ago. He measured the plates and said they were 5mm too small and I was given a £30 fine and told that if I didn't pay it, I would be taken to court."

The number plates, which were inherited upon buying the car, were in italics with bordering around the letters and plates.

A spokesperson for PSNI stated that the regulations exist to ensure that number plates can be easily read, stating: "It is important, for example, that witnesses can give accurate information to police to make appeals and issue crime prevention advice if a car is involved in a road collision or is being used in a crime."
