Wrong DVLA entries for one in five motorists

11th June 2007

Official figures have revealed that up to 7.8million drivers (one in five) have incorrect personal details held on their DVLA files. Of the 42.2million drivers in Britain, the Department for Transport has claimed that the DVLA holds accurate records for only 81.5% of those drivers.

The most common error on the DVLA records are missing accounts of a change of address or car being sold. The inaccuracies could potentially mean that tens of thousands of motorists could be sent fines and speeding tickets which had nothing to do with them.

Tory transport spokesman Chris Grayling said: "This just adds to a long list of database problems which have dogged this Government. If they can't control the DVLA database how do they think they can deal with a national ID database or a national road pricing scheme?"

A DVLA spokesman said it was "heavily reliant on the motorist to inform the DVLA of changes to details and is under a legal obligation to do so".

This latest revelation comes just months after numbers of DVLA staff were sacked for circulating pornographic images, and stories emerged that the DVLA had been selling vehicle and driver details to criminal enterprises.
