"Nazi" number plates cause a stir in South Africa
14th May 2006
The plates, which read "NAZI - WP", were displayed on the car of Shanaaz Ismail, who said "My mother abbreviated Shanaaz to Nazi when I was a year old, and it's been my nickname ever since". Ms Ismail claimed she did not realise the significance of the number plates, but agreed to have the number plates removed after receiving a phone call from a transport department official.
Suzanne Belling, the head of the Cape Council of the Jewish Board of Deputies, said she wanted to "pay tribute to Shanaaz Ismail for agreeing so readily, and for understanding the sensitivities of the Jewish community".
The transport department has offered to pay for Ms Ismail's replacement number plates.
