Number plate sells for £3.5million
14th May 2007

A number plate in the United Arab Emirates has sold for Dh25.2million (£3.5million), making it the most expensive number plate ever sold anywhere in the world, shattering the previous British record of £331,500 for M 1 last summer.
More than 700 people attended the auction which raised over Dh100million for accident victims and people with special needs.
The private registration plate, which simply reads '5' was won by Talal Al Khoury, who was up against two other bidders. When asked if the number 5 had any meaning to him, he said: "The number does not mean anything to me. I will keep it and after my death it will be re-auctioned and probably raise more money that will again be given to charity and humanitarian work."
Another number plate, '12' became the second most expensive number plate when it sold at the same auction for Dh8.9million (£1.2million).
