Number plate theft has risen in the past year
14th August 2007

Police have warned that more than 33,000 vehicles had their number plates stolen in the past year, and that car cloning is continuing to rise.
Number plates are most often stolen to help criminals avoid detection following petrol station drive-offs, speeding offences and congestion charging evasion.
Unfortunately for the legitimate owner of the number plates, the registration points to their name and address, and the first time some owners realise their number plates have been cloned is when a fine or court summons lands on their doormat.
In 2006/07 there were 33,411 thefts compared with 32,628 in 2005/06 and 26,183 in 2004/05. Theft-proof number plates have been manufactured and are now on general sale, but these can cost up to £20 a pair. The theft-proof plates shatter when a thief atttempts to remove them, rendering them useless.
Paul Smith, of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, said: "These are crimes that the Government has created. Just try proving you are innocent when someone has cloned your plate."
