DVLA employee jailed for theft
15th August 2007

A clerk employed by the DVLA has been jailed for seven months for stealing postal orders.
Alan Baumber, from Burry Port in Carmarthenshire, admitted to fourteen counts of obtaining money by deception at his recent trial at Swansea Crown Court.
Over an eight month period, Baumber stole postal orders where the payee name had been omitted and added his own name to the postal orders before cashing them.
On occasion, he made the postal orders out directly to Carmarthenshire Council in order to help settle his unpaid debt. Baumber's lawyer claimed that his client was in debt to Carmarthenshire Council as the result of a failed fish and chip shop venture.
The stolen postal orders amounted to £2,882, which Baumber must repay within six months or serve an additional three months in jail.
