Crackdown on illegal personalised plates in Berkshire
20th July 2007

Police in Berkshire are cracking down on cars displaying illegally-spaced personalised plates.
The crackdown follows concerns from the police that more and more people are altering their personalised plates to make them appear to spell words or names.
Berkshire police will especially be looking for those who display false number plates on their car in order to avoid detection from speed cameras or petrol station cameras.
People who are found with false plates will face fines of up to £1,000 and the DVLA has the power to revoke the registration number. PC Peter Hare, from the roads policing department, said: "Motorists who continue to use illegal or misrepresented personalised plates can expect to be dealt with robustly and their flouting of the law will cost them more than the cost of a set of legal personalised plates."
Police say the use of false plates is making it increasingly difficult for them to prevent and detect crime.
