Number plate ban trial is a success in China
22nd August 2007

An extraordinary experiment in China has seen cars banned from the roads of Beijing on certain days according to the digits on their number plates.
Last Friday and Sunday, cars with even-numbered registration plates were banned from the roads, and those with odd-numbered plates were ordered to walk or stay at home on Saturday and Monday.
The unique experiment appears to have been a great success, with the air pollution index falling to 93 - down from 116 last Thursday.
He Bin, a lawyer from Beijing said: "I would like to leave my car in the garage forever if the traffic is as smooth as it was during those four days. It usually takes an hour and twenty minutes to drive to my office, but the bus trip saved me half an hour. I listened to music and read newspapers on the bus."
Over 1.3 million cars were removed from the roads of Beijing each day during the experiment which was designed to test the air quality on the run up to the Olympic Games.
