So Where Are Our Flags?

20th March 2008

Welsh number plates

For a long time now, a lot of people have been looking forward to the promised official recognition of national flags on UK number plates. We were told it was in the pipeline years ago, as is demonstrated by this BBC article from 2001. At that time, "new" rules had disqualified all emblems on car number plates except the EU stars with "GB". That, understandably, annoyed nationalist-minded people in Scotland and Wales.

The transport minister at that time, John Spellar, said that the law would be changed to allow approved national emblems. He said, "It is what the people of England, Scotland and Wales have asked for and strengthens their feeling of national identity."

A while ago, it became evident that, not only had no progress been made, Welsh drivers were actually being warned that the presence of the Welsh Dragon on their plates might actually result in MoT failure. It should come as no surprise to learn that Plaid Cymru has created an online petition in order to try to get the earlier undertaking honoured.
