Vehicle Registration Marks Act becomes law

23rd July 2007

Registration plates news

Registration plates enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the Vehicle Registration Marks Bill has received Royal Assent and passed into law, and will now been known as the Vehicle Registration Marks Act 2007.

The Act simplifies the process of buying and keeping registration plates, and has become law thanks to ongoing support by the CNDA, part of the Retail Motor Industry Federation.

The Act was also backed by the Government and DVLA. The police were also very supportive of the move, as the new law will greatly reduce the potential for registration plates fraud, which has been growing in recent months and years.

The Act states that the keeper can grant retention rights for a set of registration plates directly to the purchaser. This will greatly simplify the process for the majority of transactions, and will prevent buyers of registration plates from being deliberately conned. The old system allowed owners to sell a plate without granting ownership to the buyer.
