Private number plates boom in Wigan

Recent research into the world of private number plates has suggested that Wiganers can't get enough of them.
In the Manchester region, more private number plate owners reside in Wigan than any other town, including Stockport, Oldham, Bolton and Manchester itself.
However, in the greater scheme of things, Wigan languishes way down at number 87 out of 121 cities in the poll carried out by Admiral Insurance.
Perhaps the most sought-after private number plate in Wigan is that of John Martin, director of Wigan RFC and former proprietor of the club. His Range Rover sports W1 GAN.
John says the plate is his way of showing his pride in the town, and said: "I'm not going to sell it. I've always been proud to represent Wigan through the rugby and everything else I've done, and it's my way of boasting about the town and being proud about where I come from. There is one downside to the plate though - it's so distinctive everyone always knows where I am."
However, local bus company owner Jim Stones has no fewer than fifteen private number plates, including H1 JYM, B1 BUS, BUS 1N, T1 KET, BUS 1S and BUS 1T.
Jim said: "I've got a private number plate on my own car, JBS 1, which are my initials."
