Cherished numbers transfer bill passes second reading

26th March 2007

A proposed Bill to simplify the process of buying cherished number plates has been given approval by MPs, taking it one step closer to becoming law.

The Vehicle Registration Marks Bill passed its Second Reading on Friday 23rd March, and now moves on to the Committee stage of the proposal.

The Bill has the full support of the Cherished Number Dealers Association (CNDA), the Government, and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Richard Ottaway, Conservative MP for Croydon South, presented the Bill and said: "The Bill is now one step closer to becoming law, and I am delighted."

The current cherished numbers transfer process is complicated, and has loopholes which leave the buyer open to fraud. The new proposed Bill intends to simplify the process and give the buyer more protection. The Government and the DVLA both support the Bill.

A CNDA spokesman added: "If the Bill passes into law, consumers and cherished number dealers will get a process that provides more choice and flexibility."

Under the current system, a cherished number can be held on a retention certificate for a year, pending assignment to a vehicle. However, this system means that the cherished number remains the property of the registered keeper, and not the purchaser.
