Bright green number plates for sex offenders
27th April 2007
The worst sex offenders in the US state of Wisconsin could soon be forced to drive cars with bright green number plates.
The Republican proposal took a step closer to becoming law on Wednesday when it cleared the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee with an 8-3 vote. Opponents of the measure claim that marking cars according to the drivers' past convictions was unconstitutional.
Republican Fred Kessler, who suggested naming the proposal "Hester's Law", claimed that offenders should wear a patch or badge to identify them as a danger.
The bill states that the bright green license plates should be attached to offenders' cars and trucks upon their release from prison. Offenders would also have to cover the $30 cost of the number plates.
Any offenders who don't install the number plates would be subject to fines of $25,000 and up to ten years in prison.
A similar number plate bill is pending in Ohio.
