Registration Numbers Bill gets Third Reading

30th April 2007

The Vehicle Registration Marks Bill came a step closer to becoming law last week after it passed its Third Reading.

The Bill was presented by Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway, who was in turn approached by the CNDA (Cherished Numbers Dealers Association). The Bill passed its First Reading in December 2006.

The Bill is backed by the CNDA and supported by the Government, DVLA and all major political parties.

The current law states that a cherished number can be held on a retention certificate for 12 months pending assignment to another vehicle. However, the number plate remains the property of the registered keeper even when it has been paid for.

The new Bill proposes that the keeper can grant retention rights directly to the purchaser.

The next stage of the process involves the Bill being read at the House of Lords.
