DVLA ban naughty registration numbers

30th July 2007

DVLA news

With the new 57 series of registration numbers due to reach Britain in September, DVLA marplots have taken it upon themselves to ban a list of plates deemed 'too rude' for general sale.

The forbidden registration numbers include BA57 ARD (Bastard), HE57 ABS (He stabs), EC57 ACY (Ecstacy), and TE57 CLE (Testicle).

DVLA officials feared that the new series of registrations threw up too many potentially naughty registration combinations which may be used to represent offensive words.

Also on the list of banned registrations were MY57 ASH (My stash), HO57 AGE (hostage), and EA57 GAL (Easy gal). A spokesman for the DVLA said the numbers were banned "to avoid causing general offence or embarrassment."

However, a spokesman for the Association of British Drivers summed up the views of many registration numbers enthusiasts: "The DVLA should be setting their priorities on more worthwhile issues - like reviewing safety."

In an added twist, it has also transpired that DVLA have banned all combinations of UK registrations containing the letters 'BNP', due to the connotations with Britain's far-right nationalist party.
