Texas couple charged with smuggling fake number plates

A man and a woman from Brownsville, Texas, have been arrested and charged with smuggling more than two dozen fake number plates into the United States on Tuesday.
Higinio Gonzalez, 41, and Rosa Elvia de Leon, 36 were charged with sixteen counts of tampering with governmental records.
The pair were arrested upon attempting to enter the United States at Gateway International Bridge. Sheriff Omar Lucio said: "They were coming back from Matamoras and deputies found that they had some of these license plates."
It is believed that the pair were superimposing the number plates, windscreen sticker license plates and state inspection stickers on various cars which were subsequently crossed into Matamoros to avoid a 72-hour import fee.
When the car made it across the border, the pair would then remove the number plates and inspection sticker and hand the car to the new buyer.
Sheriff Lucio said he did not rule out the possibility of some of the cars being stolen.
