Northamptonshire’s Campaign to Cut Down Vehicle Crime
03 September 2008

Northamptonshire Police has started a campaign to reduce vehicle crime. Officers from the force will be visiting shopping centres in the northern area to give crime prevention advice and fit anti-theft number plate screws to vehicles free of charge.
The campaign, launched in July, has seen more than 150 cars fitted with the tamper proof screws. Others took the screws away to fit to their vehicles at a later date.
The number of licence plate thefts in Northamptonshire North has almost doubled, increasing from 65 to 129 reports in the same amount of time.
Police believe that stolen number plates are often used to conceal the true identity of vehicles used in petrol station drive-offs and other, more serious crimes.
