Beds Police Bid To Deter Thieves

Motorists in Bedfordshire have been the victims of number plate thefts in recent weeks, resulting in parking and speeding tickets being issued to innocent owners of the vehicles.

Thieves steal number plates to mask the identity of their vehicles, and then commit crimes, leaving their baffled victims to face the punishment.

As well as receiving fines, there have been cases where vehicle owners have been summoned to court for unpaid tickets, and questioned in relation to more serious crimes.

Bedfordshire Police are hoping to reduce the number of thefts in the county in coming months by introducing licence plates that shatter when someone attempts to remove them.

Police have said, "In an effort to combat this problem, Bedfordshire Police and South Bedfordshire Community Safety Partnership have teamed up to secure your number plates free of charge."
