Motorists Use Foreign Plates To Dodge Taxes

20 August 2008

Bogus Number Plates

Criminal gangs in Hungary have been caught selling number plates from countries around the world, allowing residents to dodge paying their taxes. There have even been transactions involving African government number plates, obtained by bribing officials from the third world country.

Hungarian motorists can reportedly save up to 4,300 Euros and are willing to pay up to 1,000 Euros for these bogus number plates in order to avoid paying high registration fees, take advantage of cheaper car insurance, and mask a vehicle's identity for use in criminal activity.

Companies organising these scams are registering vehicles in foreign countries such as Slovakia and Germany, and it is said that around 2000 individuals and 3000 companies may be involved in this kind of number plates fraud.

These crimes have been linked to identity theft, and it is also possible to obtain counterfeit driving licences and passports, making it very hard for the Police to make enquiries.
