In Dubai, the number plate G 60 has sold for 1,390,000 dirham - nearly a quarter of a million pounds sterling.

The sale was the highlight of the 62nd Distinguished Number Plates auction, organised by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in the United Arab Emirates capital, which was supported by over 300 bidders.

Two to five character registrations from the F, G, H and I series were offered for sale and, in total, more than £4m changed hands for the 105 lots on offer.

Many other stylish 3-character plates made considerable gains, including G 27 [=£228k], H 90 [=£219k] and G 45 [=£207k]. Even the slightly less prestigious 4-character combinations were still considered highly desirable, with H 100 raising the equivalent of a cool £175k.

All these results have earned themselves placings as new entries in the number plate Fab 40 world ranking. You can see this startling comparison of the top prices paid here.

The Distinguished Number Plate Auctions are held every month and the RTA continues to upgrade their procedures to match the aspirations of those wishing to own personal number plates in the Middle East.

A systematic marketing campaign, coupled with extensive media support have assured the success of these ventures.
