Number Plates being globalised

Sharjah, the third largest of the United Arab Emirates, has announced that its vehicle number plates will change format, with the first of the new style plates appearing around the beginning of August.

While neighbouring emirates use western style numerals, Sharjah has, until now, used Arabic characters. This will change with the introduction of the remodelled plates.

The adoption of western style numbers will be accompanied by a change of colour scheme. A white background will replace the current orange one. This also brings Sharjah’s plates into line with its neighbours.

The Emirate’s Director General of Police, Humaid Al Hudaidi, explained that: "The initiative comes in response to the increasing number of vehicles registered in Sharjah and is in line with changing the number plates according to international standards".

Motorists with special needs can apply for a special number plate displaying the international symbol of special needs. They must provide a certificate from the Sharjah Humanitarian City while registering.
