Auction Hopes Pinned on Jackson Plate

Nearly six months on from his untimely demise, interest in all aspects of the career of superstar Michael Jackson shows no signs whatsoever of waning. Indeed, it is almost certain that the singer is destined for a place amongst the elite group of artistes such as Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and, of course, Elvis Presley, whose deaths have only increased the profiles of their work.
Memorabilia associated with such legends ranks alongside, pristine copies of their actual recordings as 'must-have' items for the armies of dedicated fans. In some cases, artefacts such as articles of clothing or musical instruments can be expected to sell for enormous sums at auctions. For example, a leather glove, once worn by Jacko for his legendary Moonwalk video in 1983, will shortly go under the hammer at a New York auction. Early indications are that it will command a sum in excess of £23k.
It was with this in mind, that Paul Goddard from Colchester in Essex, and his father, Roger, acquired the registration MJ09 JUN. They hope that they have the ultimate souvenir which will prove to be a hit with one dedicated and extremely rich Jackson fan.
'MJ' are clearly the initials of the late pop star and there are, of course many plates which bear those same letters. However, what is so special about the father and son team's plate is the all-important digits '09' and the 'JUN' suffix - June, 2009 being the date of Michael's passing.
"After much research," says Paul, "I believe my plate is the only way of representing the death of Michael Jackson on a registration plate."
The pair are currently offering the registration to the highest bidder on the eBay online auction site, with a starting price of £8,999.
Their optimism for a profitable sale is spurred by the fanaticism of people like student Thomas Slater, from Hitchin in Hertfordshire. Thomas does not even own a car but is ready to display his allegiance when the time comes, with registration MJ09 KOP ('King Of Pop').
