Motorists Have L-plates For 12 Years

Learner Plates

Reports in Ireland show that almost 55,000 motorists have had four learner permits, the English equivalent of a provisional driving licence. In Ireland, these permits last for two years, meaning that these drivers have been allowed on the roads for eight years without passing a driving test.

These figures also show that thousands of motorists have been driving without full licences for a lot longer. Over 14,000 drivers are currently on their fifth permit, and 10,000 on their sixth. This means that some “learners” have been driving for up to 12 years!

Authorities say that a significant number of people currently relying on their learner plates have booked driving tests and are planning on obtaining a full driving licence.
