Malaysian businessman, Johor Baru, has the country's most expensive personal number plate. He purchased TAN 1 for an impressive sum of Maylasian rupees equivalent to more than £35,000.

Noted local journalist, Johor Baru, commented that, for that price, one could have got a brand new BMW 118i, a Mercedes-Benz A170, four Perodua Myvis or five Proton Sagas!

The culture of Malaysia is steeped in the mysticism of numerology and many people are prepared to pay a small fortune for registrations which satisfy their belief in the good fortune afforded by particular digits.

Interestingly, the base price for personal number plates is around the £350 mark, roughly the same as over here. But, so far, Malaysians have not seen the spectacular six-figure price tags now regularly associated with registrations offered at auction and through private sales in the UK.

There is clearly an enormous potential for growth in the Malaysian number plate market and commentators have been closely monitoring the progress of the alphabetic releases of certain provinces.

For instance, in Selangor, current registrations contain the letters BKN. It won't be too long, therefore, before a whole raft of 'BMW' plates becomes available.

Similarly, supporters of the political party, the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat, or People's Justice Party), will soon be able to display their allegiance with the Penang series of letters, which currently stands at 'PJK'

British motorists are, of course, spoiled for choice when it comes to finding acronyms within number plates and we have had 'BMW' plates since 1938. Naturally, these classic registrations will fetch a premium, but you can find many affordable alternatives in the later 'prefix' versions such as G1 BMW, B6 BMW etc., which are currently available through www.regtransfers.co.uk, the UK's leading supplier, for just £548. You will be fascinated by the sheer range of possibilities presented by the site's extensive search facilities.
