Money on a Number Plate for Aussie Charity

The stereotype preferred vehicle of the surfing community is the VW Type 2 Kombi, and anyone who has ever spent a weekend in Newquay will attest to the accuracy of that cliché. Furthermore, if the lyrics to Men at Work’s classic hit Down Under are anything to go by, that wheeled icon of coastal sub-culture is also a popular choice with surfers in Australia. So, it will be no surprise if a charity dinner and auction planned to take place at date at Sofitel Gold Coast in Broadbeach, Australia finds its car park full of Volkswagens.

The event will mark the completion of a 4500-kilometre cycle ride from Perth to Surfers Paradise by Brendon Sinclair and his son. Jack Sinclair, a young person who has been widely praised for his community spirit is raising money for a young people’s mentoring project called ‘Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Australia’. The programme, which was founded in the 1970s, provides mentors and positive role models to young people.

It is hoped that the amount raised by Brendon and Jack will be added to with funds raised by an auction that will take place at the Broadbeach event. One of the lots up for sale will be the number plate SURFERS which, it is hoped, may attract bids of $20,000 or more.

Anyone care to bet what kind of vehicle it will end up on?
