A well-known motoring pundit once famously claimed that, if you bought your number plate wisely, it could be "better than money in the bank". Well, this seems to be borne out by the experience of Nick Fellone from Staffordshire.

The 45-year-old businessman frequents the aptly-named Dusk to Dawn Casino in his home town of Nottingham. During a particularly exciting game of poker, one of his opponents ran short of cash. Eager to stay in the game, the desperate punter raised the number plate NA11 SEA as a stake.

Now, Nick is a fan of number plates, already displaying his initials, NTF 24, on his Lexus 270 and PO11 KER on his Mercedes, but even he wasn't sure that 'Nailsea' was actually a real word. However, it looked like a place name and, after checking online, Nailsea was indeed confirmed as a sizeable town in North Somerset.

"I thought the registration might appeal to a company director, or someone who lives in the town and is proud of their heritage," says Nick and readily accepted the retention certificate for the plate, estimated to be potentially worth over £4000, as part of his winnings.
