18 Vehicles With Illegal Number Plates Impounded

02 September 2008

False Rwandan Number Plates

The Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) has impounded eighteen vehicles after it was discovered that they were illegally displaying Rwandan licence plates. It is thought the suspects, all from neighbouring countries, purchased the number plates in an attempt to avoid paying taxes.

The eighteen vehicles, bearing ‘cloned’ and fake number plates, were seized on Saturday and have currently not been linked with any more serious crimes.

The RRA are urging Police officers to thoroughly check any vehicle they think may be suspicious as, in some cases, criminals have put more effort into hiding a vehicle's identity. This may include changing the colour (to match that of the vehicle the plates were stolen from), changing the chassis number, and obtaining false documentation to prove their entitlement to the registration.
