All day long I have read reports stating "Number Plate Crime is on the Increase". it seems that the recent wave of number plate thefts is linked to the recent rise in fuel prices.

Thieves are stealing number plates from vehicles similar to their own to commit fill and drive fuel thefts. Our sources say there were over 14,000 "car cloning" cases last year, and advise anyone who is a victim of this kind of fraud to repot it to the Police. In some cases, innocent car owners have been summoned to court for unpaid speeding fines and even more serious crimes.

Bedfordshire Police are hoping to reduce the number of vehicle related crimes by issuing tamper proof number plates. Police have said, "In an effort to combat this problem, Bedfordshire Police and South Bedfordshire Community Safety Partnership have teamed up to secure your number plates free of charge."
