Number plate speak
If you want to truly understand the fascination behind number plates, you're going to have to learn the lingo!
Due to the nature of the UK number plates sytem, letters and numbers are used to convey different meanings and can throw up a variety of combinations.
Cherished number plates
Cherished number plates - Registrations to truly cherish!
Does that phrase sound a little strong - even odd? Cherished number plates? Why, some may ask, would anyone cherish a pair of plastic rectangles whose sole official purpose is to allow the easy identification of a motor vehicle?
When put like that, it does all seem a little eccentric, doesn't it? But eccentric is something that we in the UK do very well. The sheer number of personalised plates on British roads, and the ever increasing number sold by the largest dealers, confirm that cherished number plates are not only popular, but that they are becoming more so than ever.
As well as the sheer number of people 'voting with their feet' as it were, there are other indications that the word 'cherished' is not an overstatement. Quite recently, two wealthy businessmen (as you may have read in our news) spent half a million pounds on legal and court costs while squabbling about entitlement to a car registration number.
The number had originally been assigned to a Jaguar car that featured in a classic British motor racing movie. Due to the various degrees of dismantlement and reassembly that the Jag underwent, it was questioned whether the original vehicle still existed in its original form, and thus whether it retained its entitlement to the cherished number plates.
A futile exercise and a waste of both men's money. The judge refuse to rule on the matter, and very wisely referred the case to the DVLA!
Many people will pass a registration number down through their family, and there are literally thousands of very valuable and desirable cherished number plates now sitting on perfectly normal cars in perfectly normal neighbourhoods. If the numbers weren't so cherished and the owner could bear to part with the registration, then it would surely net them a small fortune.
However, it's not just the price of a cherished number plate which makes it truly cherished. If your plate has significance with a lost loved one or a memorable occasion, then the value is priceless. We've heard lots of stories from people who've been asked to part with their plates for ridiculously high sums of money but simply cannot bring themselves to part with their registration. It seems that, in many circumstances, cherished number plates truly are cherished.
