Are Cherished Number Enthusiasts Stereotypes?

It's very easy to place people into stereotype slots these days, even though it may not be particularly politically correct! Bringing cars into the equation is, however, a different matter and generally works out something along the lines of “He's a sales representative so must be driving a Ford Mondeo or a Vauxhall Vectra” and “She's a school run mum so will be driving a people carrier or large 4x4.” Also springing to mind are the youngsters who have just passed their driving tests and just have to have a Vauxhall Corsa. Anyone involved in an accident, of course, is usually asked “was it a BMW?” by friends in the pub.

In the 1980s, city slickers usually wore red braces and drove a Porsche 911 or 944 almost exclusively painted in Guards Red with black interior. The 'loadsamoney' brigade had arrived and with it a near explosion in cherished number plate ownership, which expressed how you had literally just made it big time in the city. Fortunately, today, it no longer takes a city slickers bonus to buy a cherished plate.

The Registration Numbers Club also turns the notion, that you have to be wealthy or flashy to even want to be associated with cherished numbers, on the head - we have members from all walks of life. Some have inherited excellent and valuable plates, some just like the individuality and appearance of the plate and have spent very little, whilst others are true enthusiasts - searching out that elusive combination to complete their collection and creating an unusual but satisfying hobby in the process.

It doesn't matter whether you drive an old banger or a limousine. As long as the vehicle is taxed and has a current MOT certificate, you can purchase and then assign a cherished number plate to it. You will have a lot of fun with its ownership, not least of which could result from becoming a member of the RNC, enjoying its quarterly newsletter and attend the annual dinner and rally.
