His and hers plates

If your spouse has a personalised plate, they might just wish you had one too. Margaret Blankstone-Schoiber was a motor racing driver for over 40 years. For most of that time she owned 345 MAB. “Just before my husband Peter retired, we decided to treat ourselves to a plate each,” she said. “He died just after but I still went ahead with buying MB 48 which at the time was the only MB number available. As a racing driver, I was always known as Maggie B. When I re-married recently, I bought 38 WS for my new husband, Wolfgang.”

It can take years to find an ideal match, as Bob Woodward discovered. Twenty seven years ago he had the vision to buy 100 MPG, which stands for 100 miles per gallon. “I recently found a splendid partner for it – J100 MPH - 100 miles per hour. The plate is for my wife Judy but the J can also represent James, my son’s name, although he’s rather hoping I’ll leave him 100 MPG instead!”

If you’re up to the challenge, it is possible to find a decent pair of ‘his and hers’ plates, even when you think one has slipped out of your grasp. “We saw PEP 5Y for sale but took too long making the decision whether to buy it or not,” said Clifford Pepper, “when we went back, it was sold, so we bought P6 PSY instead. We couldn’t believe our luck when PEP 5Y came back on the market. This time we snapped it up! We know it is self-indulgent, but we love our plates because of our surname.”

So even when you think it’s impossible to find the perfect match, don’t give up, the right one will turn up in the end.
