Number Plate Stories

It's all in the name

By Ruby Speechley

People buy name plates for all sorts of reasons, for instance the common problem of forgetting what your number plate actually is! This is something that Roberta Moody from Worthing readily admits to. She says that her reason for buying a personal plate was so that she could remember it. “After seeing some fantastic number plates on holiday in America, it prompted me to buy one when I got home. Unfortunately my initials REM are shared with a well known rock band, but I found M500 ODY which is definitely unforgettable.”

The most popular female name in the country at the moment is Sue. So when a woman called Sue from Warwickshire enquired about buying Y1 PEE, she was advised that 5 UES was also for sale. Persuaded into buying the name number, she happily attached the plates to her car. Unfortunately ‘Sue’s’ husband wasn’t so keen on the attention it was drawing to his wife, so they sold it again.

Naseem Hirani from Bristol isn’t so shy. Her husband was quick to snap up NA51 EEM for her before boxing legend Prince Naseem Hamed could get a look in! “I’m so lucky to get this number,” she admitted, “my husband saw it for sale purely by chance and decided to buy it for me to celebrate our 16 th wedding anniversary. It would take a lot of money for me to part with my new treasure,” she said.

Roger Campbell from Milton Keynes was looking for a name plate for some time before he found R6 GER. “I considered buying one with my initials ‘RC’ or ‘RAC’, but they were selling for much higher than my budget. When I was told that R6 GER had become available, I knew it was the one for me.”

He says that his interest in private plates spans some 30 years. “I saw a black Transit van in London all those years ago, with ‘Chanel’ written down the side in gold lettering. Then I noticed to my utter amazement, that the number plate on the van was ‘NO 5’!” It was a life changing moment for Roger. He decided on the spot to set himself a personal goal; to be able to afford a good quality number plate of his own. With his motivation and determination sufficiently fuelled, Roger produced a successful company, Westbury Carpet & Flooring, and twenty-eight years later, he is living his dream.

Whatever your personal reason for buying your name on a plate, don’t forget it’s unique, just like you, so wear your tag with pride.
