There will always be a No. 1

Buying a number one plate is the first choice for many ordinary people who want to be noticed. David and Wendy Bramley from Nottingham both enjoy the celebrity treatment that often comes with owning their numbers, 1 DBE and 1 WMB. “I went to see a customer of mine at a big oil company,” said David. “Just as I was arriving, the parking attendant was directing someone into the last parking space. He saw me and bent over to look at my plate then called the man out of the parking space and off to the overflow car park, waving me into the space instead!”
Not everyone is after this kind of privileged lifestyle. As the largest stainless steel keg sellers in the UK, Alan Morrow of Morrow Brothers Limited in Chorley, Lancashire knew immediately that the plate 1 KEG was for him. “It was one of those life changing moments,” he said, “I saw it advertised in the Sunday Times and it just struck a cord with me. My brother already owns A1 KEG, so the idea has always been in the back of my mind.”
Keith Butler knew from the age of 10 that he loved number plates, after he spotted 666 HOT. “As soon as I saw it, I was hooked! Some years later I saw Jimmy Tarbuck’s COM 1C number in the newspaper. It was then that I knew I had to have one some day.”
Keith went on to start his own electrical business, and as soon as he could afford it, he decided to reward himself with his first cherished number. He chose his initials, H1 KRB. After further successes, he bought K13 KMK, this time with his company’s initials. He was more than happy with his plates, but knew that one day he really wanted to own a ‘number one’ plate, preferably 1 KRB. Keith’s dream was finally realised when he won two substantial contracts. Now Keith proudly wears his badge of success on a Mercedes.
So if you want to reach ‘number one’ status, you’d better start saving now. The popularity of ‘one’ plates means that they can be amongst the most expensive in today’s market. But it’ll be worth it, because when you buy one, you’ll know you’ve made it.
