2006 - A Year in Number Plates

Last year saw some of the highest ever prices commanded for number plates, both at auction and through general sale.
The year got off to a flying start in January with the sale of VIP 1 for £285,000. It was revealed later in the year that the plate had been sold to billionaire Chelsea FC owner, Roman Abramovich.
April was host to a large DVLA auction, with five number plates selling for astronomical amounts. RU55 ELL went for £78,314, whilst MR51 NGH fetched £101,050. However, another Singh was the star of the show - 51 NGH sold for a whopping £253,888. 1 00 commanded £197,048, and Y 1 was also sold during April for an undisclosed amount, thought to be around the same amount as M 1, which sold in July for £331,500. Rumour has it that the M 1 number plate was bought by a businessman as an investment for his young son.
Amongst other plates to sell for undisclosed amounts were 1 CC and V 1 - another plate expected to have commanded one of the highest prices on record.
With records being broken left, right and centre in 2006, we're expecting 2007 to be an even bigger year for number plates.
