The current series of car registrations in Azerbaijan were introduced in 1993. The number plates are white with a black border and black lettering, with the national flag displayed on the left hand side above the letters 'AZ'. The format of the registration is NN LL NNN, with 'N' being a number and 'L' being a letter. Foreign residents have a yellow number plate with the registration in a different format. Diplomatic plates are red with white lettering.
