Images of Number Plates from Bhutan
Although number plates in Bhutan are traditionally written in English, some plates include annotations in Dzongkha, the native language. Of the above number plates, the plate on the top-left is from the 1978-1990 series, with the four-digit identifier "1388". It also includes the regional identifier "BWP", which relates to the western region of Bhutan. The plate also displays the issuing district - Thimpu, the capital city of Bhutan. The number plate on the top-right was also issued in the western region of Bhutan in the same series. The third number plate, "BP-1-1912" is from the current 1990s series and would have been issued in Thimpu, as per the "BP-1" identifier. This plate also has Dzongkha scripting. The fourth number plate was issued in Phuntsholing, a border town in southern Bhutan, as denoted by the "BP-2" identifier. The fifth, green number plate is an international missions plate, whilst the blue plate opposite with Dzongkha scripting is a diplomatic corps plate, from a similar series "CD". The brown number plate on the bottom-left is a government vehicle from the 1978 series with the "BWG" identifier, whilst the last plate would have been issued to the Royal guards, as denoted by the "RBG" identifier.
A little about Bhutan
Bhutan is a landlocked country located in the East Himalayan Mountains of Central Asia. It is bound by the Tibetan region of China to the north as well as India to the south, east and west. The country is almost entirely mountainous except for the southern Duars Plain that extends to India from the foothills of the Himalayas. The country is nearly divided equally into two by the Black Mountain Range with the land running down through the densely forested ridges and fertile, densely populated valleys to the low foothills that meet the Duars Plain. Permanent snowfields and glaciers are found high in the Himalayas. Major Cities (pop. est.); Thimphu 30,000, Phuntsholing 10,000 (1993). Land Use; forested 66%, pastures 6%, agricultural-cultivated 3%, other 25% (1993)
