Number plates in China have both English characters and Chinese script on the face. The current series of car registrations in China came into effect in 1994 and consist of blue number plates with white lettering. There is a symbol of the issuing province in Mandarin on the left hand side of plate, followed by a letter and five digits. The previous series of vehicle registrations which were in effect from 1987 to 1994 had both green and black number plates.
