The current series of car registrations in Cyprus follows the EU guidelines and has yellow number plates with the country flag displayed on the left hand side. The format of the registration is LLL NNN, with L standing for a letter and N standing for a number. The previous series which ran from 1973 to 1993 also had yellow plates, but no country flag. Prior to this, number plates in Cyprus were black with silver lettering.
