Indian number plates are used on all motorised road vehicles in the
country, and they are issued by the regional offices.
The number plates must be lit up at night, and there
are restrictions on the types of fonts that can be
used. However, many local authorities use their own
regional scripts.
Private cars must have number plates that use a white background with
black lettering, whereas commercial vehicles use black
lettering on a yellow background. The President and
state governors are not required to use number plates.
The current number plate system is in the format AA 11 BB 1111 where
AA is the two letter regional identifier, 11 is the
two digit district code, 1111 is a unique number, and
BB are optional letters to be used if the numbers have
expired.
