Indonesian number plates are unique in that they do not represent the
current regional divisions of the country, but instead
represent the now defunct Dutch Karasidenan regions.
Number plates in Indonesia follow the format of LL NNNN LL - two letters
(regional identifiers) followed by up to four numbers,
and then by one or two letters. A recent registration
numbers system for motorcycles has been recently introduced,
using three letters at the end of the registration
(LL NNNN LLL).
Private vehicles will use registration plates with a white font on a
black background. However, an unregistered vehicle
or a car with no owner will display red on white number
plates, and public transport vehicles will use black
on yellow plates.
Some Indonesian celebrities who own personalised number plates include
violinist Idris Sardi who owns B 10 LA ('biola' means
violin in Indonesian) and Leoni, an actress and singer
has L 30 NI on her car.
