The current series of car registrations in Iraq have Arabic lettering on them, with the number plates being white with black lettering and a black border. This current series came into effect in the year 2000. Prior to that the number plates looked similar, but were split into three distinct sections, with the number going on the top. Some of the vehicle registrations has English characters on them, but also showed the Arabic equivalent. The first series of car registrations were introduced in the 1940’s and the number plates were red with silver lettering.
