Car registrations in Kazakhstan have not changed much since it gained independence from the USSR. The basic format of the number plate remains the same with black lettering and a black border on a white plate. The older series when it was part of the USSR had some Russian characters, however this has been replaced with English ones in the latest series. The format of the current series is L-NNN-LLL, with ‘L’ being a letter and ‘N’ a number.
