Located in eastern Europe, Latvia is bordered by Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and Estonia.
Being part of the EU, number plates in Latvia have to confirm to EU legislation. The current series of car registrations was bought into effect in 2004 and like all other EU countries consists of a white number plate with the EU emblem on a blue background on the left hand side of the plate. The format of the registration is LL DDDD with L being a letter and D a digit.
The previous series of vehicle registrations ran from 1992 to 2004. These had the Latvian flag in place of the EU flag on the left hand side. Otherwise they were identical to the current series. Prior to 2002 Latvia was part of the former USSR, hence had Soviet number plates.
