Located in the southern part of East Africa, Malawi is landlocked by Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. The main geographical mark of Malawi is Lake Nyasa, which accounts for more than a quarter of the country.
The early series of car registrations started in 1926 and carried on till the 1960s. Like the current series the format of the number plates was LL NNNN, with the āLā being a letter and the āNā being a number. The difference between the old series and the present one is the colour of the lettering and the number plate itself. The current series has a yellow plate with black lettering and black border, whereas the earlier series had a black plate with silver lettering and border. The current series of diplomatic number plates are white with black lettering and black border.
