Located in the northern part of west Africa, Mauritania is surrounded by Senegal, Mali and Algeria. The Sahara desert covers most of the country.
The current series of car registrations are on a white plate with blue lettering. On the right of the number plate is a blue panel with the country emblem and lettering in white. The format of the current series is NNNN LL NN, with N denoting digits and L denoting letters. Government number plates have yellow lettering on a black plate, while diplomatic corps have a blue plate with blue lettering. Temporary number plates have red lettering and a red border on a white plate. All display the country initials (R.I.M.) in both English and Arabic. The old series of car registrations were black and had white lettering.
