The current series of car registrations was introduced in 2003. The number plates themselves are white with dark blue characters. The registration format is LLL DD DD, with L standing for a letter and D for a digit. The first three letters are the region identifier. For example vehicles registered in the Yucatan would have Y as the first letter of the registration. At the bottom of the number plate is a panel with are area the vehicle was registered in.
The previous series of number plates had a similar format, apart from a couple of details. The lettering was in a lighter shade of blue and at the bottom of the plate the words for the regional identifier and the letters ‘MEX’ existed.
